I just confirmed this on the MTG Judge Chat interface:

In reference to MTG Comp Rules, Rule 601.2b, and Rule 702.46, specifically in the timing of casting spells and paying costs:

If you opt to cast Blazing Shoal and splice Desperate Ritual onto Blazing Shoal the timing is so you can pay the {1}{R} cost to splice Desperate Ritual onto Blazing Shoal, and then exile Desperate Ritual to pay for Blazing Shoal.

So in Zada you get two cards that combine to do the following:

{1}{R}, exile Desperate Ritual:

Each creature you control gets +2/+0 until end of turn. Add {R}{R}{R} for each creature you control.

Seems very Magical Grixmas Land, but I'm gonna try and live the dream.

I actually loved the idea of splice, too bad all the arcane spells are mostly junk. I wish Modern Horizons had more splice onto instand and sorcery.

Same. I think they were testing the waters to see how safe the mechanic was so they could get some data for developing it further. IIRC it was going to be included in GRN as the Izzet mechanic but pulled the plug since it seemed too powerful for standard. I hope MH helps the figure out nicely what to do with it.

Well, my Zada deck doesn't durdle around waiting to assemble specific combos. I just make tokens, draw cards, pump with combat tricks, and kill everyone.

So I lived the dream. I cast Path of Anger's Flame and spliced Overblaze onto it. I followed up with Rouse the Mob and got to attack with 8 various weenie creatures for over 200 damage for the bargain price of {4}{R}{R}{R}{R} mana and 3 cards.

I'm now looking for lots of splice cards to do evil things with Zada, and maybe Feather.

Woah - so you got a copy of Path of Anger's flame for each creature?

(tries to do math)

8 1-power creatures + Zada (3 power)
9 copies of Path of Anger's Flame (and each creature gets double damage)
=+18/+0 each and double damage

Rouse the Mob another +2/+0 each
= +20/+0, trample and double damage
= 191, doubled

= 382 damage (if no blockers)

Nice!

Question: if someone puts an x/4 in the way, do you still have to assign "Lethal" (4) damage to it and trample for the rest, or can you assign "would be lethal because damage is doubled" (2) damage to it?

Path of Anger’s Flame doesn’t target, so it can’t target only Zada, and won’t be copied.

It does when you splice Overblaze onto it

Reading comprehension. Missed that part.

Yes, you have to assign the full 4 damage. Torbran is awkward in draft sometimes because he trades with a 1/1 and a 3/3 but can't trade with two 2/2s.

I know, was super epic, made me think that just maybe Splice has a deck somewhere that can really abuse it.

Soo, what I'm hearing is basically "build an Ink-Treader Nephilim Splice.dec"?
